Donegal County Library Service have just launched a suite of resources which aim to help adults improve their English language skills. They cover reading, writing, grammar and comprehension. The resources were launched in Buncrana Library on Wednesday 2nd April by Cllr Jack Murray, Cathaoirleach of Inishowen Municipal District. The launch is one of the many activities which took place as part of the One Donegal Social Inclusion Week.
Each workbook contains activities which can be completed as you read the book of the same title. There are multiple copies of these books available via branches of Donegal County Library Service and we invite groups to set up book clubs and use these workbooks to further develop their literacy skills.
Some of the titles are particularly relevant to ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students.
Speaking at the launch, Councillor Murray said: “Libraries as they are welcoming space for all, provide access to reliable information which is essential for the maintenance of active citizenship and are also one of the first services with which our new communities engage with.”
Regional Adult Literacy Coordinator Adele McElhinney stated that “Literacy is a powerful tool. It opens up new opportunities, strengthens communities and enriches lives. By providing adult learners with the tools they need to succeed, we are helping to create a more confident, skills and empowered community in Donegal.”
All of the resources can be accessed and downloaded for free from our website here: https://www.donegalculture.ie/en/services/libraries/services/right-to-read/. These workbooks add to our growing suite of resources which aim to support community inclusion.
Library membership is free and unlocks access to a large variety of free resources at your local library. There’s no late fees and you can reserve your next read from the comfort of your home and your local library will let you know when it’s ready for collection. Donegal County Library Service have many free online offerings too, such as free e-books, e-audiobooks, e-magazines, e-newspapers, online learning, and research resources.
The Adult Literacy for Life National Programme Office, based in SOLAS, funded this project through Donegal ETB.
Tá Seirbhís Leabharlainne Dhún na nGall tar éis acmhainní litearthachta dírithe ar dhaoine fásta a sheoladh. Baineann siad leis an léitheoireacht, an scríbhneoireacht, an ghramadach agus léamhthuiscint. Sheol an Comhairleoir Jack Murray, Cathaoirleach Cheantar Bardasach Inis Eoghain iad, Dé Céadaoin 2 Aibreán i Leabharlann Bhun Cranncha. Is mar pháirt de Sheachtain Cuimsitheachta Shóisialta Dhún na nGall a bhí an seoladh seo.

Ag caint ag an seoladh, dúirt An Comhairleoir Murray “Is spásanna iad leabharlanna a chuireann fáilte roimh achan duine agus cuireann siad faisnéis iontaofa ar fáil. Tá géarghá ann don fhaisnéis seo le haghaidh saoránachta gníomhaí. Is iad na leabharlanna ceann de chéad seirbhísí a bhaineann daoine ó phobail úra úsáid as.
Dúirt An Comhordaitheoir Réigiúnach leis an Chomhghuaillíocht Litearthachta d'Aosaigh Adel McElhinney faoin chumhacht a bhaineann leis an litearthacht. “Tugann an litearthacht deiseanna úra dúinn, neartaíonn sí pobail agus saibhríonn sí an saol. Nuair a thugann muid deis d'fhoghlaimeoirí fásta na scileanna seo a fhoghlaim, cruthaíonn muid pobail níos muiníní agus níos cumhachtaí i nDún na nGall.”
Tá ballraíocht saor in aisce agus bíonn rochtain ar réimse mór acmhainní saor in aisce i do leabharlann áitiúil.
