County Donegal Heritage Office
The County Donegal Heritage Office is part of the Community, Culture & Planning Directorate of Donegal County Council. The County Donegal Heritage Office began operation in July 2003 with the appointment of County Donegal’s first Heritage Officer. The Heritage Officer Programme is a joint initiative between The Heritage Council and Local Authorities in Ireland. Donegal County Council is committed to “placing heritage at the heart of public life” in County Donegal as set out in Heritage Ireland 2030 - New National Heritage Plan and in Cultúr le Chéile: Strategic Plan for Culture Division 2022-2026
The Role of the Heritage Officer
The main aspects of the role of Heritage Officer are to:
• raise awareness of County Donegal’s built, cultural and natural heritage;
• provide advice and information on heritage matters to members of the public and within Donegal County Council;
• collect data and conduct research on aspects of County Donegal’s heritage;
• promote best practice in relation to heritage matters; and
• prepare and implement the County Donegal Heritage Plan in conjunction with the County Donegal Heritage Forum.
The Heritage Council part funds the network of 31 City/County Heritage Officers in Local Authorities across the country. The Heritage Council’s vision is that the value of our heritage is enjoyed, managed, and protected for the vital contribution that it makes to our identity, well-being and future.
