National Monuments

National Monuments are monuments considered to be of national importance and archaeological merit, ranging in date from the Neolithic period to modern times that are in state ownership/care. A small proportion of our National Monuments are in state ownership with the remainder situated on privately-owned land. The National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is responsible for the protection of our archaeological monuments under the National Monuments Acts (1930-2004). To obtain more detailed information on National Monuments, please contact:

Where works are to be carried out on or close to a National Monument, Recorded Monument or within a Zone of Archaeological Potential (irrespective of whether planning permission is required or not) then the person proposing the works must give two months notice in writing to the Minister of Housing, Local Government and Heritage prior to starting.
